While you wait for us

What to do right now

Three quick steps to limit the damage, then leave the rest to us.

1

Turn the boiler off

Switch it off at the programmer or the fused spur to stop it running while it leaks.

2

Stop the water if it's pouring

If water is flowing freely, turn off the supply at the stopcock to limit the mess.

3

Towel or bucket under it

Catch the drip, mop up any standing water, and keep it away from sockets and electrics.

4

Call us

We'll talk you through it and get a Gas Safe engineer out to you, usually within the hour.

Smell gas or rotten eggs? Don't touch any switches. Open windows, leave the property and call us, and the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999, straight away.
Why it's leaking

Common causes of a leaking boiler

The good news: most leaks are a straightforward, affordable repair, not a new boiler.

Faulty pressure valve

A worn pressure relief valve is one of the most common causes, and one of the cheapest to put right.

Loose or corroded joints

Pipe joints and fittings work loose or corrode over time. A quick fix once we trace the source.

Too much pressure

If the system pressure is too high it forces water out, usually a simple adjustment or part.

Worn seals or pump

Perished seals or a leaking pump are common with age and straightforward to replace.

Only occasionally is it a cracked heat exchanger, the one repair that can mean a replacement. If it is, we'll show you exactly why, honestly.

Your questions

Leaking boiler FAQs

Is a leaking boiler dangerous?
A water leak isn't usually an immediate danger, but it shouldn't be ignored, water near electrics and connections can become a hazard, and even a small leak causes damp, rust and damage over time. If you ever smell gas (a rotten-egg smell), treat it as an emergency: don't touch switches, open windows, leave and call us and 0800 111 999 straight away.
Can I still use my boiler if it's leaking?
Best not to. Keep running it and the leak usually gets worse and can damage other parts, turning a cheap repair into a bigger one. Switch it off, put a towel or bucket under the drip, and call us. We'll often get to you the same day.
Should I turn off the gas or water?
Turn the boiler off at the programmer or fused spur. If water is pouring rather than dripping, turn off your water at the stopcock too. Leave the gas alone unless you smell gas, in which case turn it off at the meter, leave the property and call us.
Why is my boiler leaking?
Common causes are a worn pressure relief valve, a loose or corroded joint, a faulty seal, or too much pressure in the system, most of which are straightforward, affordable repairs. We diagnose the exact cause on site and tell you the fixed cost before any work.
Will I need a new boiler, or can it be repaired?
In most cases a leak is a repair, not a replacement. We're repair-first: we only ever recommend a new boiler if yours genuinely can't be fixed safely or economically, and we'll explain exactly why. No pressure-selling.
How much does it cost to fix a leaking boiler?
It depends on the cause, but minor valve and joint leaks are among the cheaper repairs. The important part: you get a fixed price upfront before we start, with no call-out fee, so there are no surprises on the bill.
Is it urgent, or can it wait?
Don't leave it. A leak rarely fixes itself and almost always gets worse, risking water damage and a bigger repair. We're available 24/7, 365 days a year, and rarely more than an hour away across North & Inner London.
